Excision of a pilonidal cyst or sinus; simple, extensive, or difficult
Pilonidal cyst, or Jeepers' disease, is an abnormal sac containing hair and dead skin that forms within the skin. Pilonidal cysts are always located near the tailbone or coccyx, above the crease between the buttocks. It is important to know that a pilonidal cyst is formed by the growth of hair and its trapping under the skin, forming a sinus or cyst. If the cyst becomes infected, it becomes a pilonidal abscess (abscess under the skin) and can be very painful. In this case, to relieve pain, a specialist doctor will drain the cyst by surgery or by making a small incision in the skin. Pilonidal means hair nest, and sometimes doctors will find hair follicles inside the cyst. Pilonidal cysts are always located near the tailbone or coccyx, above the crease between the buttocks.
This skin condition has complications such as cyst recurrence, systemic infection (spread of infection through the blood to the entire body), and skin cancer.
Open hair cyst surgery with open wound: In this case, the incision made to remove the cyst from the body is left open and bandaged. The wound heals from the inside out and heals. Although this method has a long recovery period, healing the wound takes about 8 weeks and requires a lot of maintenance and care, the risk of cyst recurrence and cyst re-formation is very low.
